FHA Condensed French Shaded NC Font

FHA Condensed French Shaded NC, credited to Michael Adkins, James Striling, and The Fontry, is a free old-school display font with a French poster flavor. Its narrow letters use extreme thick-thin contrast and sharply cut serifs. Fine inset lines add a crisp engraved effect.

A period event poster is its most convincing setting, especially for cabaret, circus, or vintage theater themes. The same decorative forms suit restaurant packaging, music covers, and heritage branding modeled on ornate handbills.

FHA Condensed French probably originated as wood type for display text, headlines, and posters. Its sharp serifs and condensed forms were common during that period. Sign painters later adapted Condensed French and added their own character.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Frank H. Atkinson included Condensed French in his lettering samples for his book Sign Painting, A Complete Manual. This book became one of the definitive guides to signwriting and hand lettering.

In 1999, Mike Adkins digitized Condensed French for inclusion in the Atkinson collection. For its re-release, Condensed French was updated with additional language support, ligatures, and OpenType alternates.
