FHA Condensed French NC Font

FHA Condensed French NC, created by Michael Adkins and James Striling for The Fontry and Fontry West, is a free old-school condensed serif with pronounced thick-thin contrast. Its towering narrow letters pack broad verticals against fine hairlines.

Large-format poster design is its clearest setting, especially for theater bills, music events, and fashion promotions that benefit from its dramatic scale. The extreme proportions also suit magazine covers and premium packaging, where the lettering can echo the slender upright shape of bottles or architectural photography. Its formal silhouette and razor-sharp detailing are especially apt for Belle Epoque and early twentieth-century historical themes.

FHA Condensed French may have originated as wood type for display lettering. Sign painters later adapted Condensed French and added their own character. At the end of the nineteenth century, Frank H. Atkinson included Condensed French in his lettering samples for Sign Painting, A Complete Manual, a manual of signwriting and hand lettering.

In 1999, Mike Adkins digitized Condensed French for the Atkinson collection. For its re-release, Condensed French was updated with additional language support, ligatures, and OpenType alternates.
