Press Start 2P Font

Press Start 2P by Cody "CodeMan38" Boisclair is a free pixel font with the compact, upright look of an early home-console interface. Its letters appear monospaced, with squared openings and clipped turns that give words a firm mechanical rhythm. The forms feel dense but orderly.

As an interface element, the font can turn menus, score panels, and game title cards into convincing retro screen graphics. It also suits arcade-event posters and game merchandise, where the rigid silhouettes can connect lettering directly with pixel-art characters, icons, and patterned borders rather than serving as neutral text.

Press Start 2P is a bitmap font based on the font design used in 1980s Namco arcade games. The uppercase letters and digits date back to Atari’s “Sprint” (1977), while the specific glyph forms in this TrueType conversion are based on those used in “Return of Ishtar” (1986), one of the first games to include and regularly use both lowercase and uppercase letters in its screen font.

Unlike the original font from the “Return of Ishtar” ROM, Press Start 2P includes non-ASCII Unicode characters for pan-European use. Support for additional non-Latin alphabets, including Greek and Cyrillic, is planned.
