ARB 85 Poster Script JAN-39 by The Fontry is a free calligraphic script with the swagger of hand-painted commercial lettering. Broad strokes sweep into fine joins and pointed exits, and the oversized loops create a dense, rolling silhouette with a strong forward slant.

Vintage entertainment and roadside advertising are its most convincing territory, especially for concert posters, bar signage, and apparel graphics. In these settings, the broad flourishes can become part of an emblem or painted sign rather than serving only as neutral lettering, and the driving movement also suits hot-rod and rockabilly themes.

The font is ARB 85 Modern Poster JAN-39 by Michael G Adkins.

Beginning in January 1932, Alf R. Becker, at the request of then-editor E. Thomas Kelly, supplied the new Art and Design section of Signs of the Times magazine with one alphabet per month. The project was expected to last only two years, but the series ran for 27 years and ended two months before Becker’s death in 1959, totaling 320 alphabets.

In late 1941, almost ten years after the first alphabet was published, 100 of the alphabets were compiled and published in book form under the title 100 Alphabets by Alf R. Becker.

The 85th alphabet, Modern Poster Script, was published in January 1939.
